In Pullman, the intimate, Greek-leaning The Black Cypress has become a fixture since opening in 2009 thanks to a creative but consistent menu—from lamb chops to house-made skordalia—packed with local ingredients. Meanwhile, South Fork Public House makes the most of nearby WSU in the form of a rich, Cougar Gold-laden mac and cheese. Follow that up with a pint at the campus creamery, Ferdinand’s.
Cookie mixes, cracked-wheat cereal, and lentil and barley flours from Joseph’s Grainery can be found online as well as—throughout the region—at Yoke’s Fresh Markets.
Actor and Yakima native Kyle MacLachlan (who is also a partner in the nearby Pursued by Bear winery) parked his old Airstream on a sheep-and-goat farmstead in Dayton for good reason: owner Joan Monteillet’s choice cheeses. The donated trailer now just serves as housing for interns, but anyone can belly up to the cheese bar at Monteillet Fromagerie and sample everything from fresh chèvre to complex, aged oozy cheeses flavored with truffle.
End the night rubbing elbows with Walla Walla vintners over craft cocktails at Jim German Bar in Waitsburg, where elaborate concoctions change with the seasons.
