Lake Chelan wineries continue to grow in number and stature, now with nearly two dozen vineyards and 260 acres of grapes. That growth was recognized when the area received a distinct AVA designation in 2009. Great golf is also at hand, for duffers and low-handicappers alike, at the nearby Bear Mountain Ranch and Lake Chelan golf courses.
Unwind after a round at Don Morse or Lakeside Park, rent a boat to explore the country’s third-deepest lake or take a stroll among the downtown boutiques and independent cafes.
Head to the western end of Lake Chelan where Stehekin—with its 104 inhabitants and an excellent bakery—abuts the North Cascades National Park. The Methow Valley winds along the Stehekin River before climbing into Glacier Peak Wilderness and access to the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT), which traverses the continent from Canada to Mexico.
Begin your visit to this western village, accessible from Chelan only by ferry or floatplane, at the Stehekin Pastry Company. Chances are you’ll meet “Cresties” who’ve come off of the PCT for some nourishment and conversation. Plenty of shorter trails mean you won’t have to trek all the way to Mexico should you crave a hike, while kayaking to the petroglyphs is another favorite outdoor activity.
