This 36-acre park on the western side of San Juan Island is known as the best spot on the islands to watch whales from shore. During the summer, resident orcas pass by the park almost daily.
The literal highpoint of the expansive Moran State Park, Mount Constitution looms 2,409 feet tall on Orcas Island. An observation tower on the summit offers spectacular views of the coastal Northwest.
San Juan Islands National Monument
The archipelago and its unspoiled wilds were named a national monument in 2013. One of the best ways to admire it all is on Lopez’s Iceberg Point Trail, offering epic views toward the Olympic Peninsula.
Rugged cliffs meet swirling waters on the north end of Whidbey Island, where bird-watching, fishing, hiking, and kayaking are a few of the outdoorsy offerings.

Boats and Floatplanes
Some of the most alluring parts of the San Juans are the ways to get there. Outfits like Kenmore Air offer daily flights to the isles, while Washington State Ferries glide across smooth waters.
Nuns at this Benedictine monastery on Shaw Island run a farm on which they spin yarn, grow produce, and make cheese. All products are available from a small on-site store, worth visiting in every season.
