The ever-changing tides guarantee you’ll never see the exact same beach twice, and with unpredictable weather, each outing will be an entirely new adventure. The Beaches region includes the southern portion of the Olympic Peninsula, stretching from the Columbia River’s mouth to the I-5 corridor and back around to the Pacific Ocean’s shores.
Cape Disappointment is a must-see destination. This 2,000-acre state park offers miles of windswept beaches that line the shores on the ocean side and along the protected Baker Bay side. An old military fort and the Lewis & Clark Historical Park encompasses 1,800 acres, fun learning opportunities abound for kids and history buffs alike.
Cape Disappointment also offers yurts, cabins, and unique historic vacation homes for overnight lodging. These make cozy oceanfront retreats for watching the winter storms. The entire Washington coastline provides a fantastic variety of hotels, motels, quaint cottages, and beautiful bed & breakfasts to choose from.
The long expanses of sandy beaches turn up some of the most unique finds. For the kids and the young-at-heart, collecting broken sand dollar halves and trying to locate their match may be the most rewarding time spent. For others, an afternoon finding bits of driftwood from half a world away is the ticket. Filling pockets and second-hand vases with a colorful array of sea glass is a treasured past time, too.
